Event Riders

John Michael Durr

John Michael Durr is an accomplished 3-Day Event rider and ICP certified trainer who has devoted most of his life to riding and training horses of all levels. Starting with horses in 1991 at Oakridge Training Stables, he worked closely under the direction of highly respected and sought after Event rider and coach Yves Sauvignon until 2003. During that time, John Michael competed multiple horses through the Preliminary level and groomed many three and four-star horses for Sauvignon before choosing to take a working student position at Flying Tail Farms.

Furthering his education as a working student, John Michael excelled under the instruction of Dayna Lynd-Pugh in Gilroy, CA. His time at Flying Tail Farms allowed him to further develop himself as a professional, building on his roots from Oakridge Training Stables. Here he not only competed at a variety of levels on a wide variety of horses, but he also began his career as an instructor.

John Michael has since been competing successfully in 3-Day Eventing for nearly a decade. In 2004 he earned a spot on the Area VI Eventing team at NAYRC in Chicago with his own mare, Imagine That. Again in 2005, he and Imagine that landed on the Area VI NAYRC team in Lexington, Kentucky. John Michael continued to develop horses to the upper levels, including his own horse High Tower, which he trained through CCI2* competition.

Amongst other young prospects, Durr introduced High Patriot, a 2010 Rolex competitor, to the Eventing scene. Most recently, John Michael has had success competing upper level horses, including his stallion Warrick III at the Advanced and three star levels, with multiple wins. Because of his extensive experience taking young horses through the ranks, John Michael is able to assist in finding the perfect horses for a wide variety of clients.

As an ICP certified instructor, John Michael enjoys training riders and horses of all levels. He feels very fortunate to work alongside some of the most well respected individuals in the world of equestrian sports. In addition to training alongside Dressage legend Lilo Fore at Sporthorse America, John Michael receives continuous education, and insight into techniques to further his teaching and training abilities from Show Jumper David Murdoch and Eventing extraordinaire Dayna Lynd-Pugh. Pairing techniques he has learned over the years with a natural riding ability, Durr is able to better both the performances of his students and the horses he rides.
